”Early in 2012, I treated a ten year old Newfoundland named Ernie. He weighed 150 pounds and was unable to get into the car to visit the veterinarian. A few weeks before, the clients had him at a specialty center where he was given a presumptive diagnosis of a progressive debilitating disease. The clients called me as they didn’t know what to do for Ernie.

I sat down with the clients and reviewed all of Ernie’s medical records, past illnesses, lab work, radiographs, medications, supplements, diet, environment, and activity. I then performed a complete physical exam. During this exam, I was able to isolate pain in Ernie’s neck at specific cervical vertebrae. This was good news for Ernie as he did not have a progressive debilitating disease, but a cervical disc lesion. This was later confirmed by an MRI.

Medications were managed, environmental changes were made and specific strengthening, balancing, mobility, and neurological enhancement exercises were introduced. Ernie was treated with myofascial trigger point dry needling, low level laser therapy, and manual manipulation. We soon had Ernie back on his feet and able to get into the car on his own.

During this time, I worked closely with Ernie’s regular veterinarian. After each treatment, I sent the veterinarian a full report. When lab work was needed, I would obtain the blood and the client would bring the samples to the regular veterinarian.

Ernie always enjoyed his visits to the Eastern Market on the weekends and he was able to continue these for some time under my care. My goal is to improve the quality of life for each of my patients and to help them pass with comfort and dignity when the time comes.
