In Office & In Home Pet Euthanasia

Should I choose in office or in home euthanasia? How does it work? If I decide to let my pet go, what will it be like?

When the time comes to determine whether or not to put your dog or cat to sleep, we use the quality of life (QOL) scale. This has been developed to assess and modify the level of care your pet needs, and the level of comfort (or discomfort) they are in.

Although many scales are made to give the patient a numeric score, we know that our pets are so much more than a number. This is why there is no numeric scoring on the QOL scale. Each aspect must be assessed and discussed to ensure a peaceful transition through this stage in life.

Benefits of In-Home Cat & Dog Euthanasia

When the time comes, the decision for home cat or dog euthanasia is the kindest care we can offer your pets during the end of their life. By choosing an at home service, we can eliminate the stress, anxiety and discomfort of travel for the family and your pet. They can be comforted and comfortable in a safe familiar environment, without the noise and smells of a veterinary clinic.

I am willing to travel to many areas surrounding Farmington, Detroit, Ann Arbor, and more (Check the list at the bottom of this page to find out if your city is included in areas served).

What Should I Expect?

I will not be wearing a lab coat or scrubs when I arrive at your home. Instead, I will be dressed comfortably so that your pet will see me as another friend. Please choose a comfortable place for you and your pet. Friends and family are welcome to join you. You may wish to have your pet on a blanket as after passing, most pets will empty their bowel and bladder.

Dr. Zinderman will spend time with you and your pet to make sure everyone is comfortable. When you are ready, I will give your pet a series of two or three injections. The first injection will be a combination of a tranquilizer and a narcotic to alleviate anxiety and pain. This will make your pet sleepy and they will look very comfortable.

When both you and your pet are ready, a second injection of an anesthetic will be given. This will make your pet unaware of their surroundings as if they were having surgery. This is followed by an overdose of a barbiturate. This works by causing all body functions to shut down in a gentle peaceful manner. Most of the time, our pet’s eyes will not close after passing.

I will confirm that your pet has passed and then give you the time you need to spend with your pet. If we have made arrangements for cremation, Pet Passages will caringly transport your pet to the crematorium. Some families would prefer to say goodbye at Pet Passages rather than having this performed at home.
