Should I choose in office or in home euthanasia? How does it work? If I decide to let my pet go, what will it be like?

When the time comes to determine whether or not to put your dog or cat to sleep, we use the quality of life (QOL) scale. This has been developed to assess and modify the level of care your pet needs, and the level of comfort (or discomfort) they are in.

Although many scales are made to give the patient a numeric score, we know that our pets are so much more than a number. This is why there is no numeric scoring on the QOL scale. Each aspect must be assessed and discussed to ensure a peaceful transition through this stage in life.

Benefits of In-Home Cat & Dog Euthanasia

When the time comes, choosing in-home cat or dog euthanasia can be one of the kindest decisions a pet owner can make. By opting for an at-home service, families can avoid the stress, anxiety, and discomfort of travel for both themselves and their pets. In-home euthanasia allows pets to remain comforted in a safe, familiar environment, free from the clinical smells and sounds of a veterinary office.

Dr. Zinderman provides in-home euthanasia services to many areas surrounding Farmington, Detroit, Ann Arbor, and additional nearby communities. (Please see the list at the bottom of this page to confirm whether your city is included.)

What to Expect

When Dr. Zinderman arrives at your home, he will not be wearing a lab coat or scrubs. Instead, he dresses in comfortable, casual clothing so that your pet sees him as a friend, not a medical professional. Families are encouraged to choose a quiet, comfortable space for the visit. Friends and loved ones are welcome to be present. A blanket is often recommended, as most pets will empty their bowels and bladder after passing.

Dr. Zinderman takes time to help ensure that both the pet and the family are as comfortable as possible. When everyone is ready, he administers a series of two or three injections. The first injection includes a tranquilizer and a narcotic to relieve anxiety and pain, allowing the pet to gently fall asleep and appear peaceful.

Once the pet is resting comfortably, a second injection of anesthetic is given. This causes the pet to lose awareness, similar to undergoing surgery. The final injection is an overdose of a barbiturate, which gently and painlessly stops all bodily functions. It is common for a pet’s eyes to remain open after passing.

Dr. Zinderman will confirm that the pet has passed and will then give the family time to say their goodbyes. If arrangements have been made for cremation, Pet Passages will handle the transportation of the pet with care and dignity. Some families may choose to say goodbye at the Pet Passages facility rather than at home. Pet Passages is located at 31039 Schoolcraft Road, Livonia, MI, 48150
